Ebook About In the vein of Lebowitz's acclaimed Netflix limited series, Pretend It's a City—The Fran Lebowitz Reader brings together two of the famed author's bestsellers, Metropolitan Life and Social Studies. In "elegant, finely honed prose" (The Washington Post Book World), Lebowitz limns the vicissitudes of contemporary urban life—its fads, trends, crazes, morals, and fashions. By turns ironic, facetious, deadpan, sarcastic, wry, wisecracking, and waggish, Fran Lebowitz is always wickedly entertaining.Book The Fran Lebowitz Reader Review :
Fran Lebowitz is a gem. Truly. Her wit is cutting and brilliant and her observations are spot on. She is N.Y. through and through and this read is more than a distinct pleasure, it is a respite from the treif being written by folks who never should have. Vent on Ms. Lebowitz... you are a tsunami we’ve been waiting for. I read this book years ago, when I was a teenager. At the time, I thought it was quite funny, so I decided to repurchase it. Part of the book's charm to me at that time was that she was iconoclastic. I appreciated her tearing things down that other people value and she was doing it in a funny way. She reminded me of Garfield the cat....consistently negative, witty, sarcastic, and willing to indulge her appetites. And, living in Manhattan, chain smoking, drinking, and writing sounded very glamorous. Her lifestyle doesn't sound glamorous to me now, just unpleasant. And, tearing things down without building anything else up isn't really interesting. Times have changed, too. When I first read it, I had very little exposure to homosexual adults, and it was cool and risky to even talk about them. Now, I look at those sections and they seem somewhat hackneyed and a reflection of an unfortunate period in history. Her comments about gender fell similarly flat to me. And, jokes aren't funny if you have to google the punchline....I didn't know many of the cultural references.
